A devastating dual terrorist attack unfolded in northern Mali on Thursday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 49 civilians and 15 soldiers, as confirmed by the Malian government in an official statement.
The attacks, which were claimed by the extremist Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), targeted two separate locations: the passengers of the boat “Tombouctou” and a military camp belonging to the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) in the Gao region.
In response to this heinous act, a swift and coordinated air-land operation led by the courageous FAMa forces successfully neutralized approximately 50 terrorists, according to the government statement. Immediate measures were also implemented to evacuate all passengers and secure the affected areas, which are currently undergoing thorough search and surveillance efforts.
Following these tragic events, Mali’s interim president, Assimi Goita, solemnly declared a three-day national mourning period, commencing on Thursday. This somber period of reflection and remembrance will serve as a collective tribute to the lives lost in this senseless act of violence.
Since the year 2012, Mali has grappled with a series of insurgencies, jihadist infiltrations, and inter-community conflicts, resulting in a significant loss of life and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of individuals. The ongoing challenges facing Mali underscore the urgent need for continued efforts to restore stability, peace, and security to the region. The international community remains committed to supporting Mali in its pursuit of a more stable and secure future for its citizens.
