The woman claimed that her home was demolished without her knowledge by the government, and that she had paperwork to prove it.
According to ANI, a woman began cooking on the streets after her home was demolished during an anti-encroachment raid in Chennai. The photographs released by the agency show people sitting on the ground and cooking food in the aftermath of the demolition.
“We have documents of our house. It was demolished without any information. I started cooking here on streets as I have nowhere to go.”- Priya, whose house was tore down during the anti-encroachment drive in Chennai said.
“Officials say they will give houses through a housing scheme for only those having three members in their family, they have made us all homeless. I have my sick mother and my kids. I will not go from here,” Priya added.
Anti-encroachment drives are taking on around the country, not just in Chennai. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation conducted an anti-encroachment sweep in Shaheen Bagh, South Delhi, which was the site of a long demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019.
The Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge to the demolition campaign, instead directing the CPI(M) and other petitioners to file a petition with the high court.
