Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Noida International Airport on Thursday, his first public appearance in western Uttar Pradesh since the government reversed three divisive farm laws.
PM Modi declared on Friday that the three central farm regulations, which have sparked large farmer demonstrations across the country in the past year, will be repealed. The opposition and farmer leaders have slammed the timing of the decision, stating it was made with the approaching Punjab and Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in mind. On the day of the announcement, he spoke in public assemblies in Mahoba and Jhansi.
The airport in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar district, is a significant infrastructure project for Yogi Adityanath’s government in the state, which is set to hold its next assembly elections in early 2022.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inspect the preparations for the ceremony, which will take place at noon on Thursday. On the occasion, the Bharatiya Janata Party has also organised a large public meeting.
The airport is being built as a public-private partnership (PPP) and is expected to be India’s largest airport once completed. Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich International Airport AG, the project’s Swiss concessionaire, is developing it.
According to news agency PTI, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh, who is also the state government’s in-charge minister of Gautam Buddh Nagar, met with Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh and other top district officials to discuss preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit.
“The minister asked all officials concerned to finalise their plan of action for the day and make sure that the programme is held as per plan. He also reviewed preparations for a helipad near the spot, the ground breaking ceremony and the public meeting,” District Information Officer Rakesh Singh Chauhan was quoted by PTI as saying.
