An IAF chopper carrying CDS Bipin Rawat crashes in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor

According Indian news agency ANI, 14 passengers were on board the aircraft, including Bipin Rawat, his wife, the Defence Assistant, security commandos, and IAF pilots.

On December 8, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and 13 others crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

According to accounts, 11 people were killed in the chopper crash out of a total of 14.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will address parliament shortly about the army chopper disaster that killed 13 people, including CDS Bipin Rawat.

Following the crash of an IAF chopper carrying CDS Bipin Rawat and others, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is keeping a close eye on the situation. A meeting of senior officials from the Ministry of Defense is currently taking place. According to sources, Singh has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the tragedy.

According to accounts, the chopper was travelling from Sulur Airbase to Wellington. According to an official, three officials have been rescued so far, with a search underway for the fourth. The injured have been sent to Nilgiris’ Wellington cantonment.

Local military officers arrived at the scene and were informed that two bodies with 80 percent burns had been transferred to a local hospital, according to reports.

In a tweet, the IAF stated, “An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

At 2.45 p.m., General Bipin Rawat was scheduled to deliver a presentation.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted “Hoping for the safety of CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife and others onboard the chopper. Prayers for speedy recovery”.

Following the military chopper crash between Coimbatore and Sulur, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will fly to Coimbatore from Chennai Airport this evening and subsequently to the Nilgiris.
