In a money laundering case, Anil Deshmukh, the former Maharashtra home minister, was placed in judicial detention for 14 days.

In a money laundering case, Anil Deshmukh, the former Maharashtra home minister, was placed in judicial detention for 14 days. On Saturday, Deshmukh appeared before a holiday court, which sentenced him to judicial remand until November 19.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) last Monday following 12 hours of questioning. The extortion case against Deshmukh is being investigated by the agency, which is based on a FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh claimed that Deshmukh urged fired cop Sachin Waze to collect Rs 100 crore per month from hotels and bars in Mumbai, prompting the CBI to file a FIR.

Waze, meantime, was arrested on Saturday and held in police custody until November 13 in connection with a money laundering investigation. On July 23, a complaint of extortion was filed against Waze. In May 2021, he was discharged from the military.

Deshmukh has denied all of the charges, but he was forced to retire in April after the CBI filed a case against him.

On Thursday, the ED summoned the 71-year-old politician’s son, Hrishikesh, for questioning. Hrishikesh was summoned by the agency on Friday, but he did not show up, according to ED officials.

Hrishikesh Deshmukh went to the sessions court on Saturday and filed a petition for anticipatory bail.

According to the ED, Waze reportedly collected 4.7 crore from several bar owners in Mumbai for “smooth bar operation” and delivered the money to Deshmukh’s personal assistant Sanjeev Palande, who later gave it to someone in Nagpur.

According to ED officers, the money was sent to the Delhi-based Surendra Kumar Jain and Virendra Jain, who ran phoney businesses, using hawala methods. The Jain brothers are accused of diverting the funds to Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, a Nagpur-based foundation run by the Deshmukh family.

Officials from the ED believe the Jain brothers were operating on Deshmukh’s son Hrishikesh Deshmukh’s orders, and they want to record his statement.
