Uddhav Thackeray resigned as Chief Minister Friday evening, sparking celebrations in the BJP camp. At Mumbai’s Taj hotel, BJP leaders could be seen handing away candy and shouting political chants. Devendra Fadnavis, who saw the Governor last night and started the end game, was at the centre of it all.
The Maharashtra BJP tweeted a video of Mr. Fadnavis giving a speech in Marathi, indicating that preparations are being made for a change of leadership. The Marathi caption on the picture said, “I’m going to return. in order to build a brand-new Maharashtra! Maharashtra, Jai “.
After the Supreme Court determined that his government must have a floor test at 11 a.m. tomorrow as instructed by the Governor, Mr. Thackeray resigned from the top position this evening. With only roughly 15 MLAs left, Team Thackeray has petitioned the court to halt the floor test scheduled for tomorrow.
His resignation renders the floor test null and void. According to insiders, Mr. Fadnavis is likely to stake a claim to form the government. He is expected to be assisted by rebel leader Eknath Shinde, whose decision to leave with a number of MLAs caused the downward trend.
There was a rumour that Mr. Thackeray may step down as a result of an unfavourable ruling from the supreme court.
The cabinet meeting last evening, where the administration renamed three cities and Mr. Thackeray formally acknowledged the ministers for their assistance and cooperation, contributed to the rumours.
“I’m leaving my position as chief minister. I don’t want to be involved in any Shiv Sainik deaths that may occur tomorrow “In his Facebook live speech this evening, Mr. Thackeray announced his resignation. In a direct attack on the rebels, he continued, “Those whom we promoted and built up, they are the ones who have betrayed us.”
