In a surprising move, Cherian Thomas, the Senior Vice President for international business at BYJU’S, has tendered his resignation and is set to take the reins as the CEO of Impending, a US-based technology company. Impending Inc, in an official statement, revealed that Thomas will be at the forefront of building and scaling the company’s product portfolio. He will also be tasked with bolstering and expanding the global talent pool.
BYJU’S, a prominent edtech firm, has yet to respond to queries regarding Thomas’ departure. A source within the company confirmed Thomas’ exit but refrained from commenting on his successor.
Impending’s co-founder, Phill Ryu, expressed immense enthusiasm about having Cherian Thomas onboard. “We are hugely excited to have Cherian Thomas on board. We share a vision of creating inspired apps with pop culture potential without compromise and have convinced each other that we are going to make it happen together,” Ryu stated.
Cherian Thomas has played a pivotal role in BYJU’s ambitious American expansion efforts. Notably, he was instrumental in leading Osmo, a subsidiary of BYJU’S, as its CEO. Under his leadership, Osmo achieved a remarkable revenue milestone, raking in over $100 million (approximately Rs. 830 crore) in FY21, as per the official release.
Thomas’ association with BYJU’S dates back to 2017 when he became the edtech giant’s first international employee. His contributions were pivotal in establishing and nurturing the international organization, as stated in the official press release.
Before his tenure at BYJU’S, Cherian Thomas co-founded the food blogging platform Cucumbertown in 2012. This venture eventually caught the attention of Japanese conglomerate Cookpad, which acquired the startup in 2016. Thomas also boasts a rich history with gaming company Zynga, having been one of its earliest employees and continuing with them until their landmark IPO in 2011.
Impending, the company Thomas is set to lead, is renowned for its creation of popular applications such as the video games “Heads Up” and “Here Kitty,” along with the listing app “Clear.”
