The Union Cabinet authorised the declaration of November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’, the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. “Week-long celebrations scheduled from November 15 to 22 to honour and commemorate the glorious history of tribal people, culture, and achievements,” Union Minister Anurag Thakur told the media during a press conference announcing the Cabinet decision. Birsa Munda, a Munda tribe member, was born on November 15th, 1875.
He led an Indian tribal religious Millenarian movement in the tribal area of modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand during British control in the late 1800s. In India, his birthday is commemorated as Birsa Jayanti, which falls on the same day as Jharkhand Foundation Day.
