Incident of alleged attempt to sacrilege in Amritsar
A guy was beaten to death in the Golden Temple yesterday for an act of “desecration.” The event occurred after the man was accused of attempting desecration at Amritsar’s Golden Temple.
According to the police, the incident occurred yesterday during evening prayers. The man allegedly leaped over the Guru Granth Sahib’s metal barrier. Then he allegedly attempted to desecrate the Sikhs’ Holy Book with a sword.
Meanwhile, SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed “shock and dismay” at the “most heinous atrocity” of attempting to commit sacrilege at Sachkhand Shri Harmandar Sahib, the highest and holiest shrine in the state.
After a six-year hiatus, Punjab witnessed such an incidence. Previously, episodes of sacrilege and consequent police fire occurred in Faridkot’s Behbal Kalan district in 2015. Two anti-sacrilege demonstrators were slain in the incident. Furthermore, this episode was a major element in the downfall of the former SAD-BJP coalition in the 2017 Punjab elections. Punjab’s assembly elections are scheduled for early 2022. Sacrilege made a resurgence in the poll-bound state just before the assembly elections.
