Child Abuse Can Be Found Even in Wealthy Families: Minister

Many people believe that child abuse only occurs in impoverished households, however it occurs in both rich and poor families, according to Union minister Smriti Irani.

Ms Irani, speaking at the National Workshop on Child Rights with an Emphasis on Preventive Aspects of Child Protection Issues, advised participants to investigate into child abuse that occurs in wealthy households, powerful organisations, and childcare institutions.

“And how can we find answers as citizens, not as bureaucrats,” the Union Women and Child Development Minister said the audience, which included NGOs and government employees.

“We as citizens, we as a nation can offer justice to all children,” she remarked, as the best measure of a democracy.

“This workshop is being held under the auspices of the 75th anniversary of our independence, and we will not truly be free until every child is protected.”

“So on your shoulders rests the freedom of a future generation,” she said, “so that they may grow without fear, so that they may grow with confidence that if they seek justice, justice will be served, so that they may grow with the belief that what you do today in the protection of children will be the flag that they will bear for their future generation.”
