According to the latest statistics issued by the National Crime Records Bureau, cyber crimes against children increased by more than 400% in 2020

According to the latest statistics issued by the National Crime Records Bureau, cyber crimes against children increased by more than 400% in 2020 compared to the previous year (NCRB). According to the report, the majority of such offences involved posting or transferring information depicting youngsters engaging in sexually explicit behaviours.

According to the report, a total of 842 instances of cyber crime targeting children were reported in 2020, with 738 (almost 87%) depicting minors engaging in sexual behaviours. In comparison, there were 164 cyber offences against children reported in 2019, down 413 percent from 2020. In 2017, and 2018, the corresponding statistics were 79 and 117, respectively.

According to the NCRB’s 2020 data, Uttar Pradesh had the largest number of internet crimes against children, with 170, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra, with 144 and 137, respectively. Kerala (107) and Odisha (71) were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

Puja Marwaha, CEO of CRY (Child Rights and You), noted that children spending more time on the internet for educational and communicative purposes has sadly made them more vulnerable to a variety of problems, including those related to online sexual abuse. “Caregivers, schools, and society have a poor awareness of the threats that children may face online. “It’s important to teach them about what youngsters should know so that they can properly advise the latter,” Marwaha added.
