According to a court filing, former President Donald Trump sued New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on Monday in an attempt to halt her years-long civil investigation of his business transactions.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in upstate New York, argues that Democrat Letitia James is conducting a politically motivated inquiry into Trump’s constitutional rights.

“Her goal is completely motivated by political animosity and a desire to harass, threaten, and retaliate against a private citizen whom she perceives to be a political opponent,” it stated.

James is looking into whether the Trump Organization may have submitted fraudulent property valuations in order to get banking and tax benefits.

Trump’s lawsuit, James said in a statement posted Monday, is a “attempted collateral attack” on the investigation.

“No one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump,” she stated, adding, “Our investigation will continue unabated.”

Trump filed his complaint after the Washington Post revealed earlier this month that James had summoned him to appear in person on January 7 at her office.

She began her probe in March 2019 and believes the Trump Organization inflated the value of particular buildings when applying for bank loans, then claimed far lower valuations when declaring assets to pay less tax.

In October 2020, James’ office interviewed Trump’s son Eric, who is executive vice president of the Trump Organization.

Several legal investigations are putting pressure on the former president.

On October 18, he was interrogated for more than four hours as part of a lawsuit filed by a group of protestors who claim his security officers assaulted them six years ago.

The Manhattan district attorney is also investigating the Trump Organization for suspected financial crimes and insurance fraud.

The Trump Organization and its long-serving finance manager, Allen Weisselberg, pleaded not guilty to 15 felony fraud and tax evasion charges in a New York court in July.

The trial will commence in the middle of 2022.

Meanwhile, Trump is fighting to keep investigators from seeing years of his tax returns.

In Washington, he is attempting to block a congressional investigation into his supporters’ January 6 attack on the US Capitol from gaining access to White House materials relating to that day.
