The US Geological Survey said on Saturday that a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck a sparsely inhabited area of Western Australia, 24 kilometres (15 miles) from the small town of Marble Bar.
The quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and occurred at a depth of 40 kilometres, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) (25 miles). The climate in the area is extremely hot and dry.
