Constitution Day: Here’s All You Need To Know

Today, November 26th, is Constitution Day in India. It is held to commemorate the Constituent Assembly’s passage of the Indian Constitution in 1949. In addition, Constitution Day is also known as ‘Samvidhan Divas.’

The Constitution was ratified on November 26, 1949, and went into effect on January 26, 1950. A gazette notification from the government has confirmed the date of Constitution Day. On October 11, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for the B.R. Ambedkar Statue of Equality memorial in Mumbai.

BR Ambedkar was also honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Amit Shah and various other ministers also recognize the day.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was India’s first law minister in the Congress-led government. In addition, in 1947, he was chosen head of the constitution drafting committee, with the task of establishing the country’s new constitution.

Ambedkar’s draught of the Samvidhan was defined as “first and foremost a social treatise.”

Constitution Day is not a public holiday

At first, it was exclusively observed by the various departments of the Indian government. The preamble of the Samvidhan was read in all schools by all students, according to the Department of Education and Literacy. Many events relating to ‘Constitution Day,’ such as quizzes and essay competitions, are available both online and offline. Students in higher education have also organised mock parliamentary discussions in their colleges.

Background of this Day

B. R. Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956) celebrated his 125th birthday on this day in 2015. He was recognised as the Samvidhan’s father. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has declared November 26th as ‘Constitution Day.’ The day was declared a national holiday by the government in November 2015.

A good constitution, according to BR Ambedkar, might become a bad constitution if the people do not implement it properly. A terrible constitution can be turned into a good one if it is implemented properly.
