Facebook’s Meta is being sued by a photo app for duplicating its major feature for Instagram

Photo, a photo app, has filed a lawsuit against Meta (previously Facebook) for allegedly plagiarising its features for Instagram. According to the complaint, users were able to capture five frames “in a single point-and-shoot burst” that could be looped into a short video using Phhhoto’s technology.

Facebook cloned this major feature and distributed it as “Boomerang” on its Instagram platform, according to Phhhoto. According to the Verge, the business also prevented Phhhoto from using Instagram’s API and from being pre-populated in Instagram posts.

In a case filed in US District Court, Phhhoto claimed that Facebook and Instagram’s actions “destroyed Phhhoto as a viable business and harmed the company’s prospects for investment.”

“Because of Facebook’s anticompetitive behaviour, Phhhoto failed. Phhhoto was positioned to grow into a social networking behemoth, comparable in size, scope, and shareholder value to other social networking and media firms with which Facebook did not intervene, if not for Facebook’s actions “It was also included.

“This complaint is without merit,” a Meta representative stated, “and we will firmly defend ourselves.” Phhhoto was shut down in 2017 after reaching a peak of 3.7 million monthly active members.

The now-defunct photo app alleged in its lawsuit that “Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, former Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom, and several other Facebook workers downloaded the app in August 2014 and investigated its capabilities.”
