On the third day of political violence in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara (Island in Australia), rioters set fire to buildings and plundered the smouldering ruins of shops, as Australian peacekeeping soldiers began to deploy.

According to an AFP correspondent on the scene, tens of thousands of protesters, some armed with axes and knives, rampaged through the city’s Chinatown and central business areas.

A big warehouse in Chinatown was set on fire, resulting in an explosion that left scores of people fleeing the area in fear.
