General Naravane is a front-runner for the post of CDS

Even as PM Narendra Modi’s Cabinet Committee on Security convened on Wednesday evening, sources indicated the administration is expected to name a replacement to the country’s first-ever CDS Gen Bipin Rawat soon.

The CCS meeting was not officially announced, but members observed two minutes of silence and paid tribute to all those who died in the tragic Mi-17 V5 crash on Wednesday afternoon.

Army Chief General M M Naravane, on the other hand, is widely seen as the frontrunner for the CDS job, despite the fact that the IAF’s Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari and the Navy’s Admiral R Hari Kumar took over their respective forces on September 30 and November 30, respectively.

Gen. Naravane will step down in April of next year. According to the new military rules, a CDS can serve until he or she is 65 years old, while the three Service chiefs can serve until they are 62 years old or for three years, whichever comes first.

“In eastern Ladakh, there has been a 19-month military standoff with China. Then there’s the issue of merging the Army, Navy, and IAF into theatre commands, as well as establishing the much-needed synergy in procurements, planning, logistics, training, and doctrines,” a senior officer stated.

“Gen Rawat had started the whole thing, but his tragic death has left the job unfinished,” he continued. Gen Rawat wore three hats in the defence ministry: chief of staff, permanent chairman of the chiefs of staff committee, and secretary of the newly constituted department of military affairs.
