On Sunday, India’s health ministry announced 6,987 new coronavirus infections and 162 deaths. This brought the overall number of active cases to 76,766 and the number of deaths to 4,79,682. The number of Omicron cases in the country has increased to 422, with at least 130 people recovering, according to the health ministry.

Meanwhile, the Omicron variety was first identified in Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. There are 108 cases of the new variation in Maharashtra, which also has the most coronavirus cases. Following it is Delhi, which has 79 cases. Telangana has 41 cases, whereas Gujarat has 43.

In light of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, India stated on Saturday that booster doses for health and frontline workers, as well as those over 60, will begin on January 10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also stated that vaccines for children aged 15 to 18 will begin on January 3 in a late-night address.

In the meantime, the Delhi government has enforced a night curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., effective December 27.
