In last five years, child marriages in Rajasthan have decreased by 10%: Reports

According to the National Family Health Survey 2020-21 (NFHS-5), the fifth in the NFHS series, the percentage of women aged 20 to 24 who were married before turning 18 in Rajasthan decreased by 10% from 2015-16 to 25.4 percent, a fall of 10% from NFHS-4.

This trend was also noticeable among men aged 25 to 29, who were married before turning 21, with 28.2 percent of men falling into this category in 2020-21, compared to 35.7 percent in 2015-16.

Rural areas continue to have a greater rate of child marriage, with 28.3 percent of females marrying before the age of 18 compared to 15.1 percent in urban areas.

According to NFHS-5, 28.2 percent of males and 25.4 percent of girls were married before they reached the legal age of marriage.

Early marriage for boys in rural regions has decreased significantly in Rajasthan, from 44.7 percent in 2015-16 to 33.2 percent in 2020-21. Early marriage among boys in metropolitan areas remained stable at 16 percent for NFHS 4 and 5.

The gains are particularly notable in rural Rajasthan, where child marriage has decreased by roughly 12% from 40.5 percent in 2015-16 to 28.3 percent in 2019-20. Between 2015-16 and 2019-20, child marriage in urban Rajasthan fell by 5.2 percentage points, from 20.3 percent to 15.1 percent in the respective years.

The NFHS-5 fieldwork in phase 2 States/UTs was split into two sections due to the Covid-19 incident and the implementation of lockdown. The Indian Institute of Health Management Research performed NFHS 5 fieldwork in Rajasthan from January 2, 2020 to March 21, 2020 prior to the lockdown and from December 10, 2020 to March 1, 2021 after the lockdown (IIHMR). A total of 31,817 houses, 42,990 women, and 6,353 males were surveyed.
