At least 26 Maoists were slain in an encounter with police on Saturday in eastern Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, almost 900 kilometres from Mumbai, according to senior officials.

“So far, we’ve discovered the bodies of 26 naxals from the forest,” said Ankit Goyal, district superintendent of police.

Mr Goyal said the gunfight occurred in the morning at Korchi in the Mardintola forest area, while a C-60 police commando unit led by additional SP Soumya Munde was conducting a search operation.

While the identities of the Maoists slain have yet to be determined, sources claim that a key insurgent leader was among them.

Four police officers were also critically hurt in the incident and were flown to Nagpur for treatment, according to officials.
