Spam calls are becoming more common in many parts of the world, but the problem appears to have gotten significantly worse in India in the last year. Truecaller has released a new analysis that examines spam calls and their effects around the world. According to the survey, India is ranked fourth among the top 20 countries most hit by spam calls this year.
India was ranked eighth in 2020, but is currently just behind Brazil, Peru, and Ukraine on the list. Brazil leads the list with an average of 32.9 spam calls per user per month, far more than Peru, which comes in second with 18.02 calls per user per month. Take a look at the complete list below:
According to the survey, India’s ascent in the rankings is attributed to an increase in sales and telemarketing calls. All types of sales-related calls account for the great majority (93.5%) of all inbound spam calls this year. Financial services accounted for 3.1 percent of spam calls, with nuisance and scam calls accounting for the remaining 2% and 1.4 percent, respectively.

The KYC (know your customer) scam is still one of the most popular in the country. This is when fraudsters pose as a bank, wallet, or digital payment provider and request KYC documentation from unwary users, as required by the Reserve Bank of India.
