At the age of 71, seasoned South Indian actor Sarath Babu passed away in a hospital in Hyderabad today. According to the hospital, he has been receiving treatment there since last month for multiple organ failures. “He was brought to AIG Hospitals on April 20, 2023, in critical condition with multiorgan failure because of multiple myeloma. As an immunocompromised patient, he was under the care of a multidisciplinary team and was supported with a mechanical ventilator for the lungs and dialysis support for the kidney, among other therapies. He succumbed to his illness in spite of the best resuscitative measures. Our sincere condolences are with his family and fans,” stated AIG Hospitals in a statement.
Sarath Babu is well-known for his work in Telugu and Tamil movies. He has appeared alongside Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, NTR, Chiranjeevi, and other prominent actors. Following his passing, many in the South’s entertainment community paid tribute to the late actor. Tweeted Kamal Haasan: “A great actor and a great friend, Sarath Babu, has passed away. The days of acting with him are a shadow in my mind. Introduced by my Guru (Balachander) in Tamil. He excelled in many timeless roles. The cinema has lost a good actor. My tribute to him.”

Born Satyam Babu Dixitulu, Sarath Babu made his acting debut in the Telugu film Rama Rajyam in 1973. He then collaborated with K Balachander in Pattina Pravesam. With the help of the seasoned director’s Nizhalgal Nijamagiradhu, which also starred Kamal Haasan, he rose to fame. Sarath Babu co-starred with Rajinikanth in films like Annamalai and Muthu.
In addition to Kannada films like Ranachandi and Amrutha Varshini, Sarath Babu has roles in Malayalam films like Sarapancharam. He last appeared in the Tamil film Vasantha Mullai and also had a part in Vakeel Saab, directed by Pawan Kalyan.
