Thousands of women disobeyed district administration to participate in a marathon organised by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra this morning, giving a big boost to the party’s women-centered “Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon (I’m a girl, and I can fight)” campaign in Uttar Pradesh.

Despite the local authorities denied permission for the marathon due to increased cases of Omicron strain, videos uploaded by the Congress on Twitter and other social media platforms showed massive crowds in Lucknow and Jhansi.

The girls refused to return to Jhansi, and the police refused to let them proceed.

The state government did not have a problem when lakhs of students flouted Covid protocols during a government programme where laptops were distributed, then why now,” a women is heard saying in a video posted by Congress on Twitter.

The Congress has stated that the first three victors in both marathons would receive a scooty, while those finishing fourth to 25th will receive a smartphone. The next 100 women would receive fitness bands, while the following 1,000 women would receive medals, according to the party.

The party had not charged the attendees any entry fee.

As the assembly elections approach in Uttar Pradesh, women’s issues are becoming more prominent in the campaign.

The Congress, which has been reduced to a virtual non-player in the state’s recent elections, has been focusing on gender equality in the state, which has had many crimes against women reported in recent years. Some of these cases, such as the gangrape of a Dalit lady in Hathras and the case in Unnao, grabbed national headlines and sparked outrage.

The BJP has also introduced a variety of programmes for women in the politically key state, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi putting over 1,000 crore into the bank accounts of over 16 lakh women in less than two months.

During the governments of both Akhilesh Yadav and his father and party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party attempted to showcase its achievements for women. “Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) had women’s bathrooms built and was the first to offer them gas cylinders, although he was never photographed. The current government, on the other hand, is photographed. You should assist in the formation of an SP government since the SP has worked (for the people) ” said by Aparna Yadav, Mulayam Singh’s younger son Prateek Yadav’s wife.
