A significant political event occurred on Wednesday when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha called a meeting at the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar with the heads of the major political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
This occurs a day before the Amarnath Yatra, which is being organised by the government of the Union Territory for the first time since the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was abolished in August 2019.
On Wednesday morning, letters were distributed inviting officials to a “high tea” in the Raj Bhavan auditorium. However, the invitation makes no mention of the meeting’s topic, which is scheduled for the evening.
The parties have acknowledged receiving the invitation, but they have not yet decided whether or not to attend the meeting.
This is the first such move since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Territory’s political leadership convened at an all-party summit in June 2021.
