Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement this morning that he would repeal three laws that farmers have been protesting for over a year, Congressman Rahul Gandhi tweeted an old video in which he predicted the repeal.

Since Prime Minister Modi’s surprising declaration, many people have echoed the January remark. On January 14, the Congress MP tweeted the video with the message, “Mark my words, the government will have to repeal anti-farm policies.”

He says in the video: “I’m quite proud of what the farmers are accomplishing. And I am a strong supporter of farmers and will continue to do so. In a yatra in Punjab, I raised their issue, and we shall continue to do so. Take note of what I’m saying. Take my word for it. The government will be compelled to repeal these laws. Keep in mind what I said.”

This morning, he shared the video again with the comment: “The country’s ‘annadatas’ have defeated arrogance with their satyagraha. Congratulations on this victory against injustice. Jai Hind, Jai Hind ka Kisan!.”

The administration has long claimed that the three agricultural regulations passed in September of last year were intended to modernise the industry, and that farmers may now sell their produce to buyers outside of government-controlled wholesale marketplaces, where growers are guaranteed a minimum price. Farmers have said that the rules will eliminate the guaranteed minimum price for their produce, leaving them at the whim of corporations.

The BJP faced a significant challenge ahead of a succession of major state elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where farmers make up a sizable vote group. Recent bypoll losses have already tarnished the party.

“While apologising to the nation, I’d want to remark with a sincere and pure heart that perhaps something was missing in our tapasya (dedication) because we couldn’t express the truth to some of our farmer brothers as clearly as the light of the diya. But today is Prakash Parv, and it’s not the time to point fingers. I’d like to inform the country today that we’ve decided to remove the three agriculture regulations “Today, Prime Minister Modi stated.

The opposition applauded the action, but accused the administration of doing so while brazenly eyeing poll gains.
