The tourism industry, which was severely harmed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, is now facing a potential crisis. According to travel companies, cancellations have surged during the holiday season.

Here’s a 5-point cheatsheet on tourism amid Omicron threat:

  1. The Omicron menace is beginning to affect India’s tourism industry. Outbound travel cancellations have increased by 20% in the last three days, according to Sriharan Balan, managing director of Madura Travel Services in Chennai.
  2. Following a lengthy shutdown in 2020, the industry had begun to resurface this holiday season. However, due to the Omicron danger, outbound bookings to Dubai, Europe, and the United States are starting to decline ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays. “Many people who had planned to visit these places this season have cancelled their plans” Mr Balan said.
  3. Maharashtra’s new travel limits have sparked fears that other states would follow suit, putting domestic tourism at risk.
  4. Tamil Nadu, which has three international airports, saw five lakh outbound travellers during the 2019 winter holiday season before the pandemic. Due to the pandemic, the same season in 2020 witnessed no increase. During the same time period this year, the Omicron danger struck again, just as the travel and tourist industry was beginning to recover.
  5. Customer interest in traditional travel companies that provided customised services had begun to resurface, but the Omicron threat appeared to have slowed this rise.
