Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has stated that he will run for the Patiala assembly constituency in the forthcoming state elections. “I’ll be running from Patiala. Patiala has been with us for 400 years, and I will not abandon it because of Sidhu “Captain Singh made the announcement on his official Facebook page. Mr Singh’s family has a stronghold in Patiala; he has won the seat four times, and his wife Preneet Kaur served as its representative for three years from 2014 to 2017. Maharaja Sir Yadavinder Singh, the former Chief Minister’s father, was the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala.
Mr Singh announced his own political party, the Punjab Lok Congress, earlier this month, promising to run for all 117 seats in the state legislature.
During the continuous feud between the two, Mr Singh challenged state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu to run against him from the seat in April this year, which snowballed into a full-fledged crisis in the state unit of the party and led to Mr Singh’s unceremonious removal as state Chief Minister.
Mr Singh reportedly informed Mr Sidhu that he would be defeated as thoroughly as BJP General (retd) JJ Singh, who ran in the 2017 election but finished nearly 60,000 votes behind Mr Singh and received only 11.1% of the vote, forfeiting his security deposit as a result.
Mr Sidhu retaliated with a Tweet that read: “Attempts to derail Punjab’s conscience are doomed to fail… Punjab is my soul, and Guru Granth Sahibji is Punjab’s soul… Our fight is for justice and the punishment of those who have broken the law… an Assembly seat is not worth (discussing) in the same breath!! “
