The government has made a significant step to encourage India’s local defence sector. In reality, the Ministry of Defense has placed 216 military weapons and defence systems on the Negative Import List, indicating that these defence systems would be manufactured in India. The ministry’s action will help to bolster the domestic defence sector.
Let us remind you that the Ministry of Defense, under the presidency of the late Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, released two lists of 108 military weapons last year, with an import embargo in place from December 2021 to December 2025.
At the same time, the ministry said that under the provisions of the Defense Acquisition Process (DAP) 2020, all 2016 defence equipment will henceforth be acquired from domestic vendors. In reality, over the last few years, the federal government has taken a number of steps to promote the country’s military industry.
The list will be available soon
According to the Defense Ministry’s new Defense Procurement Policy, the defence manufacturing industry will be worth Rs 1.75 lakh crore by 2025. According to insiders, the ministry is debating which defence equipment to put in the second list with the public sector and private defence manufacturing firms. The list will be ready in a few days.
