The political temperature in Uttar Pradesh appears to be increasing as the state prepares for elections due for early next year. On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will pay a day-long visit to Amethi in order to boost party worker morale and entice voters.
In Amethi, Gandhi would take part in the BJP bhagao, mehangai hatao (Remove BJP, Remove Inflation) padyatra. The padyatra is part of the Congress’ nationwide ‘Jan Jagran Abhiyan’ campaign. The campaign’s goal is to bring attention to the government’s economic incompetence.
From Jagdishpur to Harimau, the almost six-kilometer-long padyatra will take place. He would also hold ‘chaupals’ (public meetings) in rural areas after the padyatra. Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress’s national general secretary, will also pay a visit to Amethi on Sunday, according to the news agency ANI.
After nearly two years, Rahul Gandhi is returning to Amethi. The Nehru-Gandhi family has long had a stronghold in Amethi. Rahul Gandhi ran for general elections in 2019 from two constituencies: Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. He won the Wayanad seat, but he lost the Amethi seat.
The rally and visit take place ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP won 312 seats in 2017. The state’s 403 constituencies yielded 47 seats for the Samajwadi Party, 19 for the Bahujan Samaj Party, and seven seats for the Congress.
Because Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Amethi is long overdue, party members are gearing up to greet the brother-sister combo.
