An unforeseen emergency has cast a shadow of uncertainty over Russia’s ambitious lunar mission as the Luna-25 probe encountered difficulties during a crucial manoeuvre ahead of its Moon landing, announced the Russian space agency Roscosmos. The incident occurred on Saturday during an attempt to transfer the probe onto a pre-landing orbit, a critical step in its journey to the lunar surface.
In a press release, Roscosmos revealed, “Thrust was released to transfer the probe onto the pre-landing orbit. During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the carrying out of the manoeuvre within the specified conditions.”
The Luna-25 lander, marking Russia’s return to lunar exploration after nearly half a century, successfully entered the Moon’s orbit last Wednesday following its launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome situated in the Far East of the country. However, the recent setback has raised concerns about potential delays to the scheduled landing, which is anticipated to take place on Monday, in the vicinity of the Boguslawsky crater located on the lunar south pole.
Despite the incident, Roscosmos has not yet confirmed whether the emergency will indeed postpone the planned lunar landing. Back in June, Roscosmos Chief Yuri Borisov had acknowledged the inherent risks associated with such missions, estimating a success probability of roughly 70 percent. The primary goal of the Luna-25 probe’s mission is to spend approximately a year on the Moon’s surface, where it is tasked with collecting samples and conducting soil analyses.
