Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi and National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will meet with Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, on Tuesday in an effort to rally support for his party in the midst of a contentious conflict with the Central Government, which recently enacted an order reclaiming authority over the bureaucracy. This meeting takes place at a time when Banerjee has been conducting discussions with numerous leaders of the opposition in an effort to establish an alliance of parties that are not affiliated with the BJP in advance of the Lok Sabha election in 2024.
On May 25, Kejriwal is scheduled to see Sharad Pawar, the supremo of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), according to sources inside the Aam Aadmi Party. On Wednesday, Kejriwal will meet Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former chief minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, in Mumbai.
Kejriwal met with Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, the week before last, and the JD(U) leader pledged his party’s “complete support” to Kejriwal in the AAP’s current dispute with the Central Government over who has control of administrative services.
Both Kumar and Kejriwal had been in contact with one another for more than a month before this encounter. Kumar had already met Kejriwal in Delhi on April 12.
Kejriwal has said that he will speak with the heads of a number of parties in order to garner support for the issue. “If the bill is defeated in Rajya Sabha, it will send out a message that the BJP will lose the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It will be the semi-final of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls,” Kejriwal had said.
In addition, the AAP has announced that it will hold a “maha rally” on June 11 in opposition to the Central government’s proposed “black ordinance.”
“This black ordinance has made it clear that the BJP-led Centre will impose dictatorial decisions like this on the country. Therefore, the AAP has decided to launch a campaign against it along with the people of Delhi. On June 11, the people of Delhi will gather for a ‘maha rally’ at Ramlila Maidan to express their anger against this ordinance,” AAP’s Delhi convenor Gopal Rai said at a press conference.
A few days after the Supreme Court declared that the government of Delhi had executive authority over “services,” including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Centre presented an ordinance last week making the Lieutenant Governor the ultimate arbitrator in the case. This came a few days after the Supreme Court found that the government of Delhi had executive power over “services.”
An ordinance has been passed to create a “National Capital Service Authority,” whose purpose is to provide recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on topics pertaining to transfer posting, vigilance, and other incidental concerns.
Members of the body will include the Chief Minister of Delhi, the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government, and the Home Secretary of the Delhi government. The decree said, “Provided also that in case of difference of opinion, the decision of the Lieutenant Governor shall be final,” the order read.
