In mid-February, just after his Test omission, riddhiman Saha dropped a massive bombshell when he accused a senior journalist of threatening him via text messages. Following the announcement of India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka home series, Saha said that a senior journalist had approached him for an interview and had threatened him if he didn’t respond.
Saha had published a screenshot of the entire episode (i.e. his Whatsapp conversation with the journalist) on social media, which caused a stir among Indian sports fans. Boria Majumdar was identified as the journalist after much discussion. BCCI intervened and took the situation into their own hands when the text row became a big headline and drew a lot of attention.
Following a review of the investigative committee’s report into the Indian wicketkeeper’s texts by the BCCI’s highest council on Wednesday, the Indian cricket body decided to ban Majumdar for two years (May 04).
According to recent developments, the BCCI’s highest council has agreed to the BCCI Committee’s recommendations. As a result, it has decided to levy the following penalties:
A two-year restriction on obtaining accreditation as a member of the press for any domestic or international cricket match in India.
In India, there is a two-year ban on gaining an interview with any registered player.
Access to any BCCI and member association-owned cricket facilities is prohibited for two years.
Many former cricketers, including Ravi Shastri, Aakash Chopra, Virender Sehwag, and others, criticised Saha for his intimidation and threatening tone in text when he released the Whatsapp discussion screenshot on Twitter. Before Boria confessed it was him, Shastri and Sehwag pressed Saha to name the journalist. Before the BCCI’s conclusion was released on Wednesday, the story had become a heated topic of conversation.
