Following the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha members, the Opposition and the Centre have clashed. The suspended MPs protested by sitting near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Wednesday. After M Vekaiah Naidu declined to lift the suspension, the Opposition predicted that the House will be disrupted for at least the next few days.
The Rajya Sabha has been postponed for the day as opposition members continue to protest the suspension of 12 members of Parliament. The Upper House was adjourned for the first time shortly after it met for the day, and then twice more after that. MPs urged that Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge be given the opportunity to comment on the suspension, while the Jal Shakti Minister introduced the Dam Safety Bill for discussion. The Chair, however, declined to allow him to speak, eliciting outrage from the opposition.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha has been postponed until noon due to ongoing protests by TRS members over agricultural issues. During Question Hour, members yelled slogans and held banners on agricultural issues in the Well of the House. Speaker Om Birla warned the protesting members that what they were doing was wrong and that Question Hour was crucial. BJP member Nishikant Dubey urged the Centre to draught a law quickly to implement a Uniform Civil Code in the country during Zero Hour in the House.
“The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare has no record of the subject and hence the topic does not arise,” the government said in response to a question in Parliament about whether it plans to provide financial help to the families of farmers who died during the agitation.
